PAPERWEIGHT WORKSHOPS

BEGINNER PAPERWEIGHT WORKSHOP
- An introduction to techniques and skills such as gathering, centering, blocking, and marvering
- An introduction to glassblowing machines, tools of the trade and proper shop etiquette
- Basic color application using powders and frits
- Create and keep two (2) paperweights: one clear and one with color (results may vary)
- Class for two is about three to three and a half hours for two (2) students or a one and a half hour class for one (1) student
- One instructor per two (2) students…allows for constant hands-on experience

Prerequisite to the Intermediate Paperweight Workshop and the Glassblowing Class
No prior experience needed!
INTERMEDIATE PAPERWEIGHT WORKSHOP
Prerequisite: Must be able to successfully create two (2) paperweights in the Beginner Paperweight Class (see above)
- Further practice of glassblowing techniques such as gathering, marvering, jacking, flashing, centering and breaking off finished products for annealing
- More advanced color application such as finger bits and threadwraps
- Create and keep two (2) paperweights with color (results may vary)
- Class for two is about three to three and a half hours for two (2) students or a one and a half hour class for one (1) student
- One instructor per two students…allows for constant hands-on experience

Prerequisite to the Glassblowing Class
THE GLASSBLOWING WORKSHOP
Sharpen and advance the skills you acquired in your prerequisite Paperweight Classes
- Four (4) sessions; Each session is 3-4 hours long for two students or 1.5-2 hours long for one student
- One session per week
- Each Session begins at 6:00PM – Day of week will be determined between instructor and student(s); available some Sundays starting at noon
- One instructor per two students…individualized attention promotes quick advancement
Cost per student: $750.00 ($804.38 w/ tax)

Session One
- Assessment of current skill level
- Explanation of blowing processes, tools and review of proper shop etiquette
- Advancement of basic techniques: gathering, centering, marvering, blocking, flashing and jacking
- Creating the starter bubble!
- Detailed, step by step demonstration of how to blow a piece
- If instructor decides student is ready, student will attempt to make a shot glass or toothpick holder out of his/her starter bubble
Remaining session content may vary from student to student
Session Two
- Review of topics covered in Session One
- Advancement of basic techniques, starter bubbles and small tumblers
- Create two-gather tumblers!
- Instructor will demonstrate a flared bowl
Session Three
- Review of topics covered in Session Two
- Advancement of basic techniques, starter bubbles and small tumblers
- Begin flared bowls
- Instructor will demonstrate vessel
- Create a small vessel!
Session Four
- Review of topics covered in Session Three
- Advancement of basic techniques, starter bubbles, small tumblers and vases
- Applying all techniques learned in multiple glassblown vessels!
- Expound to variations of the shapes made so far
- Mini-workshop on punties (shaping, appropriating sizing and temperature to piece intended)
** Prerequisites for the Glassblowing Class **
You must be able to complete the following tasks before taking the Glassblowing Class. These skills may be acquired in Vetro’s Beginner & Intermediate Paperweight Classes.
- Take a clean gather of glass from the furnace
- Marver or newspaper
- Use of Jacks
- Proper Heat Flashes
- Work with no gloves
- Center the piece on the pipe
- Break off the piece from the pipe
Additional Information
All workshops and classes are held at VETRO Glassblowing Studio in Grapevine TX. VETRO supplies all tools, glass and color within your designated time slot. You must be at least 18 years of age and no shorter than 5’2″ in height in order to operate the equipment safely. The paperweights must anneal (cool and strengthen) for a period of time after the class and will be ready for pickup or shipping 2 weeks following the class. Shipping is an additional charge.

Once we have received your form and payment or your information over the phone, we will send you a receipt and notice that will confirm the date of your class and list what items you need to bring (see below).
Reservations: Only paid reservations are guaranteed!
Cancellation: In case you need to cancel or reschedule a class, a full refund can only be issued if you provide 24-hours notice prior to your class time.
What to bring/wear to class (Very Important)
- All clothing must be cotton
- Long pants (No shorts will be allowed)
- Closed-tipped shoes (i.e. tennis shoes)
- Long-sleeved cotton shirt Optional– no billowy sleeves
- Hat or headband
- Sunglasses
- Long hair should be pulled back securely
Please eat a well-balanced meal before arriving to your class. Water and sports drinks are recommended; caffeinated beverages are not. A water fountain will be available to you at all times at the studio. All Alcoholic beverages or illegal substances before and or during any workshop are strictly prohibited.
